The Problem

In 2020, the Louisville Metro Police Department killed 7 people in Louisville, all of whom were Black. 2020 was not an anomaly. Since 2013, LMPD has killed, on average, 5 people each year.

This pattern must stop.
We must end police violence in our city.

Fraternal Order of Police contracts
protect corrupt and violent police.

The 490 Project is addressing significant issues with the current and future River City Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) contracts. Our goal is to mitigate the harm police cause and hold them accountable for violence.

Police contracts dictate how the city and the LMPD respond to the behavior of officers. River City FOP contracts are written only twice a decade. The current contract protects officers from any and all liability by:

  • Disqualifying misconduct complaints

  • Restricting or delaying interrogations

  • Giving officers unfair access to information

  • Limiting oversight and discipline

  • Requiring our city to pay the costs of misconduct

  • Erasing police misconduct records

Other cities around our nation (Austin, Washington D.C., Minneapolis, and Portland, to name a few) have implemented policies that demonstrate public safety can be ensured without murdering our citizens. We, too, can end police violence in Louisville. Find out how you can be part of the solution!
